Synopsis

Britain is in the grip of a chilling recession... falling wages, rising prices, civil unrest - only the bankers are smiling. It's 1783 and Ross Poldark returns from the American War of Independence to his beloved Cornwall to find his world in ruins: his father dead, the family mine long since closed, his house wrecked and his sweetheart pledged to marry his cousin. But Ross finds that hope and love can be found when you are least expecting it in the wild but beautiful Cornish landscape.

The show really captures the tough times of the era, with falling wages and unrest, but also the beauty of the Cornish landscape and the unexpected moments of hope and love. Aidan Turner brings a lot of depth to Ross, and with five seasons and 43 hour-long episodes, there’s plenty to get lost in. It’s perfect for anyone who enjoys a mix of personal drama and historical setting, something like Downton Abbey but with a rougher edge. Watching it feels like stepping back into a world where every choice matters and the land itself is almost a character.
