2025 was a strange year for television. The volume came down, the budgets came down, and what survived was mostly shows with a very clear idea of what they were. A lot of the year's best work arrived in January, which almost never happens, and a lot of it was one season long by design.
Everything below premiered or aired a new season during the 2025 calendar year. No 2024 leftovers, which is the trap most of these lists fall into. Each entry says what it is, what it costs you in hours, and who should skip it.
The three nobody argued about
Severance came back on January 17, 2025 after a three-year gap and somehow did not fumble it. The second season runs ten episodes, opens up the world outside Lumon, and answers roughly half of what you wanted answered. Watch it if you like structure and dread in equal measure. Skip it if unresolved mystery makes you angry. Apple TV+, second season January 17 to March 21, 2025.
The Pitt is one fifteen-hour shift in a Pittsburgh emergency department, told in real time, one episode per hour. Noah Wyle anchors it and the format turns out to be the whole point: there is no cutting away to a subplot, so the pressure never releases. Watch it if you miss medical drama that respects the work. Skip it if you cannot handle procedural detail. HBO Max, premiered January 9, 2025.
Adolescence is four episodes, each shot in a single continuous take, about a thirteen-year-old arrested for murder. It became Netflix's most-watched limited series, passing 96 million views, and the third episode is the best hour of acting anyone did in 2025. Watch it if you want something that will not leave you alone. Skip it if you need distance from the subject. Netflix, March 13, 2025, four episodes.
Comedy that had something to prove
The Studio is Seth Rogen as a newly promoted film studio head failing upward through long unbroken takes and an absurd number of cameos. It is anxious in a way that is genuinely funny rather than just loud. Watch it if you enjoy industry satire. Skip it if you want warmth. Apple TV+, March 26 to May 21, 2025, ten episodes.
The Bear returned for a fourth season in the summer and steadied itself after a divisive third. It is still a drama wearing a comedy's category tag, and the kitchen scenes still work better than the therapy ones. Watch it if you stayed through season three. Skip it if you bailed. FX on Hulu, fourth season June 2025.
Poker Face gave Natasha Lyonne a second run of twelve cases, each a self-contained inverted mystery with a guest cast. There is no serialised weight to carry. Watch it if you want an episode-a-night show. Skip it if you need arcs. Peacock, second season May 8 to July 10, 2025.
Genre done properly
Andor finished with a second season that covers four years in twelve episodes and remains the only Star Wars project that works entirely as adult political drama. You do not need to like the films. Watch it if you want tension built from bureaucracy. Skip it if you want lightsabers. Disney+, second season concluded May 13, 2025.
Alien: Earth brought the franchise to television with Noah Hawley writing, and it is far more interested in corporate ownership of bodies than in jump scares. Watch it if Hawley's Fargo worked for you. Skip it if you want a straight monster show. FX on Hulu, premiered August 12, 2025.
Peacemaker closed out in the autumn with a second season that is funnier and sadder than the premise suggests, and John Cena is genuinely good in it. Watch it if you like broad comedy with a real emotional floor. Skip it if superhero fatigue has set in. HBO Max, second season concluded October 2025.
The ones that ended
Squid Game wrapped in June 2025 with a third season that is bleaker and shorter than what came before, and it does commit to an ending rather than leaving the door open. Watch it if you started. Skip it if season two lost you. Netflix, concluded June 27, 2025.
Stranger Things began its final season in late November 2025, released across the holidays. It is the last piece of appointment television of the old kind, in the sense that everyone you know watched it in the same two weeks. Watch it if you have the previous four seasons in you. Skip it if you do not. Netflix, fifth and final season from November 26, 2025.
One more worth your time
Dying for Sex is eight episodes with Michelle Williams as a woman with terminal cancer who leaves her marriage to find out what she actually wants, and Jenny Slate as the friend who stays. It is much funnier than that sentence suggests. Watch it if you want the year's best performance nobody in your group chat has seen. Skip it if the premise is too close to home. FX on Hulu, April 4, 2025, eight episodes.
