Best HBO Shows of 2026: What Aired and What Is Finished

HBO's problem has never been quality. It's that half its best shows are on indefinite hiatus and the other half ended years ago, and the app doesn't tell you which is which. So this covers both: what actually aired on HBO and HBO Max in 2026, and what state each show is in if you're deciding whether to start it.
Checked September 9, 2026. Everything in the first section has already aired this year. Anything not yet out is kept separate at the bottom, and where a return is only announced, it says so rather than guessing at a month.
Aired in 2026
The Pitt came back for a second season on January 8 and ran fifteen episodes to April 16. It's still the best argument for weekly television on the service: one shift, one hospital, real time, and a cast that has to carry the whole thing without a plot twist to lean on.
Who should start it: anyone burned out on prestige shows that take three episodes to get moving. This one is at full speed by minute four. A third season is in the works with no date announced.
Industry returned January 11 with eight episodes through March 1, its first season since 2024. The London investment-bank drama has quietly become the most vicious workplace show on television, and it does not slow down to explain a single financial term.
Who should start it: viewers who liked Succession's cruelty but want characters with something to lose.
Hacks ended. The fifth and final season ran April 9 to May 28, ten episodes, and closed out Deborah Vance and Ava's partnership properly. It also picked up 24 Emmy nominations for that final season, more than any comedy had received in a single year.
Who should start it: anyone who wants a complete five-season comedy with an ending. This is the strongest recommendation in the piece.
Euphoria finally delivered a third season, April 12 to May 31, eight episodes, four years after the second. Whether the wait was worth it depends entirely on how much patience you have for the show's style, which has not softened.
Who should start it: people who already liked it. It converts nobody.
House of the Dragon ran its third season from June 21 to August 9, eight episodes, and the war it spent two seasons setting up finally arrives at scale. A fourth season is in the works, undated.
Who should start it: Game of Thrones viewers who bailed after season 8 and want a version with a fixed ending in the source material. The difference is that Dragon is a court drama with dragons attached rather than an ensemble adventure.
Recent and complete, if you want an ending
Task ran seven episodes from September 7 to October 19, 2025, and it's the sleeper of the last twelve months. Crime drama, Philadelphia, and a structure that keeps flipping which side you're rooting for.
Peacemaker finished its second season on October 9, 2025 and is listed as ended at two seasons. Sixteen episodes total, the most fun anything DC has put on television.
Succession ended with season 4 in May 2023 and there is no fifth season, whatever a headline tells you. Four seasons, a real ending, and it holds up.
Somebody Somewhere closed out in December 2024 after three short seasons. Twenty-one episodes in total, and it's the quietest, kindest thing HBO has made in a decade. It's also the best counter-argument to the idea that this network only does misery at scale.
The Righteous Gemstones ran its fourth season from March to May 2025, nine episodes, and across four seasons it built the most reliably funny ensemble on the service. Danny McBride's televangelist family are appalling in a way that stays affectionate, and the season-long plots are constructed with far more care than the tone suggests.
Who should start these: anyone who wants a full run they can finish without waiting on a renewal announcement. Both are done, both are around thirty hours or less, and neither ends on a cliffhanger.
Great, but on pause
These are the ones people start without realising the wait ahead.
The Last of Us aired its seven-episode second season between April and May 2025. A third season is in the works with no announced date, and given the gap between the first two seasons, that gap is likely to be long.
The White Lotus ran its Thailand season from February to April 2025, eight episodes. A fourth is in the works, undated. Each season stands alone, so there's no cliffhanger cost to starting now.
IT: Welcome to Derry premiered October 26, 2025, and The Chair Company started October 12, 2025. Both are early enough that a status verdict would be a guess.

If you want something finished and excellent tonight, Hacks. If you want weekly tension with no fantasy, The Pitt. If you want to be appalled by rich people, Industry, then Succession. If you want dragons, House of the Dragon season 3 is the payoff season.
