Best Netflix Shows of 2026: What Landed and What Is Finished

Two questions matter when you open Netflix in 2026, and only one of them gets asked out loud. The first is what's good. The second, the one that actually decides your evening, is whether the thing is finished or whether you're signing up for another eighteen-month wait between seasons.
So this is both lists at once, checked September 9, 2026: what landed on Netflix this year, what state each show is in, and what has a date on the calendar but hasn't aired yet. Everything here has a verifiable premiere window, and where a season is only announced, it says so.
Out now and worth your night
Bridgerton got the year's biggest event slot. Season 4 released in two parts, the first four episodes on January 29 and the rest on February 26, eight in total, and it hands the season to Benedict and Sophie. It's the most confident the show has been since season 1.
Status: renewed, season 5 announced without a date. The books mean this thing has runway for years.
Who should start it: anyone who wants a romance per season with no obligation to remember much between them.
One Piece came back on March 10 with eight episodes and, more importantly, did not fumble. The live-action adaptation nobody thought would work is now two seasons deep with a third ordered.
Who should start it: people who bounced off the anime's episode count. This is the compressed version.
The Night Agent dropped its ten-episode third season on February 19. It remains the most efficient thriller on the service: one conspiracy per season, no homework, ten hours and out.
Status: renewed, season 4 undated.
Who should start it: anyone who wants Netflix's version of a network procedural with a bigger budget.
Virgin River put its seventh season up on March 12, ten episodes, and an eighth is ordered. Seven seasons in, the small-town Northern California comfort machine still works exactly as advertised.
Who should start it: people who want a show they can half-watch across a whole winter. The difference from a prestige drama is that missing ten minutes costs you nothing.
Wednesday is worth a status note even though it didn't air this year. Its second season ran August and September 2025 across eight episodes, and a third has been ordered without a date, so anyone starting now has sixteen episodes and no wait for a cliffhanger resolution in sight.
Sweet Magnolias returned June 11 with a fifth season of ten episodes. Same register as Virgin River, more focused on a three-way friendship than a central romance.
My Life With the Walter Boys released its third season on August 6, ten episodes, with a fourth ordered. It is the definition of a low-stakes hit and it keeps landing high on Netflix's own weekly charts.
Finished, so you can binge without a cliffhanger
Stranger Things is done. The fifth and final season closed out with its finale on December 31, 2025, which makes 2026 the first year you can watch the whole thing start to finish. Five seasons, one story, an ending that exists.
Who should start it: the holdouts. There is no longer any reason to wait.
Squid Game ended in June 2025 after three seasons. It's a complete arc now, and the back half is much bleaker than the first season people remember.
Alice in Borderland wrapped its third and final season in September 2025, six episodes. If you liked Squid Game's survival-game mechanics but wanted more science fiction underneath, this is the one.
Heartstopper concluded in July 2026 after three seasons. It is the gentlest thing on this list by a distance and it lands its ending.
Dark deserves a mention in any "finished" column. Three seasons, 2017 to 2020, German, and it plots its entire time-travel structure to a conclusion that actually closes. It's the best completed series in the Netflix catalog.
Dated but not out yet
These have release dates and have not aired as of today, so treat them as calendar entries rather than recommendations.
The Diplomat returns October 15 with an eight-episode fourth season. Keri Russell's ambassador show is the smartest thing Netflix makes in the political register, and it has been renewed consistently.
Lupin comes back October 23 for a fourth season, its first since 2023. Omar Sy's gentleman thief series is the rare French Netflix original that broke out globally.
Emily in Paris has a sixth season set for December 24, following the fifth that arrived in December 2025. You already know whether this is for you.
The one everybody asks about
The Witcher released its fourth season on October 30, 2025, the first with Liam Hemsworth in the role. A fifth and final season has been announced, and as of September 9, 2026 Netflix has not announced a premiere date. Anyone telling you a specific month is guessing. Watch season 4 or don't, but don't plan a year around the finale yet.
